Reading with your child at home is one of the best ways to not only spend time with your child, but to also continue the learning process at home. Reading to your child helps to begin a love for reading, develop comprehension skills, concepts of print, (the letters on the page make words and those words have meaning) critical thinking skills, and many other skills your child will need as he or she grows and continues through their school careers. When you read with your child, ask your child questions about the page you read to them. If it is a story your child is familiar with, let them tell the story to you! It might not be exactly what the story is really about, but they are using their thinking skills and imagination to create their own story. This tab will contain lists and links to great books you can read with your child. Many of the books we have read in class and you can read them again at home. Young child like repetition and even though they have already heard the book, it is great for them to hear it again to help them remember parts of the story that will help them put the sequence of events in order and strengthen their comprehension skills. Just 15-20 minutes a day can make a huge difference!
